Simple Living Tip of the Month

Everyone knows Americans eat way too much red meat; but the consequences of this kind of diet do not just impact our own bodies. It costs the planet a lot to produce. In an article from April 2008 in the American Chemical Society Journal, "Food-Miles and the Relative Climate Impacts of Food Choices in the United States," the research shows that red meat produces 150% more greenhouse gas emissions than chicken or fish. "Shifting less than one day per week’s worth of calories from red meat and dairy products to chicken, fish, eggs, or a vegetable-based diet achieves more greenhouse gas reduction than buying all locally sourced food." If you want to read an abstract or the full article, it is published online at http://pubs.acs.org/cgi-bin/abstract.cgi/esthag/2008/42/i10/abs/es702969f.html. It's a bit heady but valuable information!

P.S. Still buy locally grown food! :)
